Why was the Healthcare Commission set up?
The Healthcare Commission replaced the work of the Commission for Health Improvement. We also took over some responsibilities from other Commissions.
The Healthcare Commission:
- took over the private and voluntary healthcare functions of the National Care Standards Commission
- covers the elements of the Audit Commission's work which relate to efficiency, effectiveness and economy of healthcare
In addition, the Healthcare Commission has a range of new functions. We also hope to integrate the functions of the Mental Health Act Commission with our work, subject to the passing of further legislation.
