How the survey results will be used
The NHS staff survey provides information on the attitudes and experiences of staff in the NHS and can be used to improve working conditions and practices in healthcare services, and therefore the quality of care provided to patients.
The results help to meet two of the Healthcare Commission’s objectives:
- to provide local NHS trusts with information to improve the working conditions and experiences of their staff
- to provide results for deriving measures of the performance of NHS trusts for use in the Healthcare Commission’s annual health check
Annual health check 2006/2007
Some of the questions and key scores in the NHS National Staff Survey 2006 are directly relevant to some of the Department of Health’s core standards. The Healthcare Commission will use these in the annual health check for 2006/2007, which will be published in October 2007.
Improving working lives
Most of the questions and key scores in the NHS National Staff Survey 2006 are directly relevant to the Improving Working Lives assessment.

Health and Safety Executive audit
Staff survey results can also be used to feed into trusts' Health and Safety Executive audit requirements.
Some of the questions and key scores in the NHS National Staff Survey 2006 are directly relevant to the six management standards for work related stress, launched by the Health and Safety Executive in November 2004.
