Health services should be shaped by what matters most to patients and the public. We are building up a national picture of people’s experience that will allow us to compare the performance of different organisations, changes over time and variations between different patient groups.

A review of Black and Minority Ethnic group coverage in the Healthcare Commission's patient survey programme
In 2006, the Healthcare Commission published the results of a review assessing whether trust level patient surveys provide accounts of the experience of black and minority ethnic group (BME) patients that are as accurate as the accounts they provide of the experiences of white patients, and made recommendations about how accuracy might be improved.

Primary care patient survey consultation
In August 2004 the Advice Centre at Picker Institute Europe asked PCT survey leads, StHA patient and public involvement (PPI) leads and approved contractors for their views about the primary care patient survey programme. The resulting report is available here:

Patient survey data sets available through Essex Data Archive
Patient survey data sets are publicly available through the UK Data Archive held at Essex University. We have deposited data from the 2003 and 2004 survey programme and will continue to add to this.
