National survey of NHS staff 2007

This is the fifth annual national survey of NHS staff, which was conducted between October and December 2007. The survey is believed to be the largest annual staff survey in the world. Almost 156,000 employees from all 391 NHS trusts in England (a response rate of 54%) responded to a questionnaire asking about their views and experiences of working for the NHS.

The purpose of the survey is to look at the attitudes and experiences of NHS staff both nationally, because of the importance of the NHS, and by individual trust, so that employers can review any issues with their own staff and take action. To enable this, we have already provided each NHS trust with its own detailed report.

Summary of key findings

Below you can download a summary of the key findings for the NHS as a whole. This report includes comparisons with the results of previous surveys wherever possible.

You can also look at spreadsheets containing the data for each question in the survey, which are categorised by the type of trust, as well as feedback and summary reports for individual trusts.

Findings for individual sectors

Key findings from the 2007 staff survey are also available for each type of trust.  Below you can download a summary of the key findings for staff in each sector, which highlight any major changes from the previous surveys.

Individual feedback reports for trusts

We provide feedback to each individual trust with a full report and a shorter summary report on its scores for the staff survey, which can be used to benchmark performance with other trusts. To download the full and summary reports for each individual trust, please click on one of the links below. The organisations are firstly listed by type of trust and are then placed in alphabetical order.

Making sense of your staff survey data

Details of the ‘key scores’ (these are the 26 scores derived from the survey which cover the issues that are most important to trusts) presented in the feedback reports for individual trusts are available at the link below. There is also information about differences in results from previous years, the confidence intervals, and the procedures used to ‘weight’ results.

Detailed spreadsheets

The percentage responses for all questions in the survey from all respondents are available below.

Please note, unlike the reports for individual trusts above, which were weighted by occupational group, the data in these detailed Excel spreadsheets are not weighted. This is to enable every trust and strategic health authority to view their raw un-manipulated survey responses, although it means that the scores in the spreadsheets will sometimes vary slightly from those presented in the individual reports for trusts.
