Submission and use of performance indicators

In April 2007, it is anticipated that rules on the frequency of inspection in the independent healthcare sector will change, from annual inspection to more targeted, appropriate and risk based assessments and inspections. For providers that can demonstrate that they comply with the independent healthcare national minimum standards, this could mean that inspections are only carried out every five years.

As part of this new approach, a series of high-level indicators have been developed to help monitor the performance of providers in the independent healthcare sector. These indicators will be one of the factors taken into account when we assess a provider’s risk of non-compliance with national minimum standards and plan the frequency of inspections. On November 15th 2006, providers of acute hospital services were required for the first time to submit data in relation to these performance indicators to the Healthcare Commission.

Initial guidance on the use of performance indicators is provided below. We urge all providers of acute hospital services in the independent sector to ensure that they have read and understand this guidance.

The submission webform for Quarter 4 2007/2008 (1 January 2008 to 31 March 2008) will be available from Tuesday April 2nd 2008.
