Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2000
The Department of Health transferred the responsibility for IR(ME)R to the Healthcare Commission on 1 November 2006. This resulted in the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) (Amendment) Regulations 2006, which came into force from this date. We are now responsible for enforcing the regulations, through a programme of assessment and inspection.
All notifications of incidents where patients have been exposed to ionising radiation to a degree ‘much greater than intended’ should be sent to us using the web-based notification form. Please use the link below.

In March 2008, we published a report on our first 14 months of enforcing the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2000. The report includes an analysis of notifications of incidents for the period 1 November 2006 to 31 December 2007, where patients had received an exposure of ionising radiation to an extent ‘much greater than intended’.
We also publish quarterly update reports on notifications made and the nature of incidents. The following report covers the period 1 January to 31 March 2008.
