Acute hospital portfolio - accident and emergency (A&E) 2004

This page contains information for trusts who participated in the 2004 audit and for those participating in the 2005 BAEM clinical audits.

About 15 million people attend A&E departments in England every year and they have always attracted a lot of public interest. Indeed most members of the public have visited one, so they have first hand knowledge of A&E services. A&E was originally audited by the Audit Commission in 2000. The work was taken over by the Healthcare Commission in April 2004 and work on an updated audited for 2004 commenced immediately.  Data on activity and performance was collected in July 2004 which has since been analysed and fed back to departments during the winter 2004/05.

BAEM / Healthcare Commission clinical audit tools - second round 2005

Many departments participated in the Acute Hospitals Portfolio audit in 2004 of performance against the BAEM clinical effectiveness standards for:

  • pain in children
  • fractured NOF
  • paracetamol overdose

If you did, you should by now have received feedback on your results from your external auditor and we hope you found them useful.  The response has been very encouraging and many departments have told us they have already implemented improvements.  In order that we can record these improvements in the published data we have arranged a second audit.

A number of departments have already submitted results which are being reflected in the published data.  We thank those departments for they efforts they have made.

The second audit can be started at any time appropriate for your department.  Please download the audit tools using the link below.  Click on the link with the right hand mouse button and then click 'Save target as' in the dialogue box.  Save the zip file in a folder of your choice.  Extract the audit tools (Excel files) and open them - be sure to enable macros.  Further instructions are contained in the 'Readme' sheet in the tools.  Any queries should be e-mailed to baemaudit@healthcarecommission.org.uk
