Acute hospital portfolio - ward staffing 2004/2005

This page contains information for trusts who participated in the 2004/2005 audit.

Ward staffing was one of three reviews carried out by the Healthcare Commission in 2004/2005 as part of the acute hospital portfolio. The portfolio transferred to the Healthcare Commission from the Audit Commission which had carried out a similar review in 2000. This has enabled some analysis over time to be carried out.

The review focused on:

  • the quality of the care delivered;
  • the make up of the workforce and how it is used and
  • costs and expenditure.

National report

The review is now complete. All acute trusts and PCTs that took part have received an individual report. A national report was also published on 27th June 2005 and is available to download here.

  • A benchmarking tool for trusts, which has a planning component. This enables trusts and others to download benchmarking data at trust and ward level. Trusts can also use it to find out average staffing levels by grade for different types and sizes of wards. Please note these are averages - not norms. The tool should be used in conjunction with the topic guide for further explanation of all the indicators used.
  • To download the tool please click the right hand button on your mouse and use the 'save target as' command.  Do not try to open directly from the website.
